GAME PREVIEW - BAYCATS VS ROYALS (JULY 27TH, 2023)

by Sam Aucoin

BARRIE – With the transaction deadline behind us, a new weekend emerges as the Barrie Baycats will play four games in four days. Beginning tonight at home, the Baycats will play two of four games against a new-look Guelph Royals team. It is also the first annual Pride Night at the ballpark.

For a team that has won two in a row and has four games coming up in a very short amount of time, the Baycats have a lot of innings to eat up this weekend and will have to rely on good starts from their rotation in order to save bullpen arms. This could mean a start for Cole White who was recently brought back as a Baycat right before the deadline, or Turner Spoljaric, a guy who was also recently signed by the team.

Tonight’s matchup against the Royals marks the fourth time this season that these two teams will square off with each other. With a 3-0 record and a plus-17 run differential when Guelph is on the other side, the Baycats will look to build on that as they will face them again this Sunday for a make-up home game which starts at 3:05 pm.

The Royals, 5-5 in their last ten, hosted Welland on Tuesday and were defeated 6-1 by the first-place Jackfish. Now with 2022 IBL MVP and former Baycats pitcher Claudio Custodio and IBL all-time home run leader Sean Reilly, this is not the same Royals team that started 2023. Fortunately for Baycats fans, Custodio is reported to start Saturday against Hamilton and therefore is unlikely to pitch against Barrie this week.
