Baycats Clinch Playoff Spot With 4-2 Win Over Welland
Barrie, ON - The Barrie Baycats officially punched their ticket to the postseason with a 4-2 victory over the Welland Jackfish, backed by a strong outing from Saul Vasquez and a big night at the plate from Wandy Ciprian.
Barrie wasted little time getting on the board. Noel McGarry Doyle reached and eventually came around to score when Ciprian lined an RBI double to left field, giving the Baycats a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Vasquez kept Welland off the board through the first three innings before the Jackfish answered in the fourth. Ethan Mann reached and later scored on a Brendan Luther RBI single to left field, evening the game at 1-1.
The Baycats responded in the bottom of the fifth. Canice Ejoh and Kristyan Puyol-Genossar both came around to score when Francisco Hernandez delivered a two-run double to left field, putting Barrie back in front 3-1. Welland once again cut into the advantage in the sixth when Mann connected for a solo home run to centre field, making it a one-run game.
Vasquez settled back in and prevented the Jackfish from finding the tying run, completing seven innings while allowing just two runs on four hits and three walks. The left-hander struck out seven to earn the victory and turned a 3-2 lead over to the Barrie bullpen.
Ciprian provided some much-needed insurance in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Erik Johnson, Ciprian worked the count before launching a solo home run to right field, extending Barrie's lead to 4-2. He finished the night 2-for-4 with a double, home run and two RBI, accounting for half of the Baycats' offence.
Boris Vecerka took care of the rest, tossing two scoreless innings to secure the save. Vecerka allowed just one hit and struck out four without issuing a walk as Barrie's pitching staff combined to hold Welland to five hits while recording 11 strikeouts.
The victory also secured Barrie's place in the Canadian Baseball League postseason, officially clinching a playoff spot as the Baycats continue through the final stretch of the regular season.
