OFFENSE DOES ITS JOB IN A 9-4 WIN OVER GUELPH

by Sam Aucoin

BARRIE — A weekend of baseball ends with another Baycats victory, 9-4 over the Guelph Royals. Winners of three in a row, Barrie has won five out of their last six games.

Today it was Carson Burns leading the offense. Burns went three for four at the plate scoring two runs. With a career-high .321 batting average and plus defense at shortstop, Carson has been a huge part of this Barrie offense.

Malik Williams, Starlin Rodriguez, and Adam Odd each drove in a pair of runs. Rodriguez, getting his first start since suffering an injury a few weeks ago in Hamilton, will be a big part of the top of the order down the stretch. Williams and Odd continue to produce in the middle of the lineup, working walks whenever they don’t get pitches to hit.

Barrie got four runs in the third and two in the sixth which was the difference in the game. Evan Soules was able to fight through six innings picking up the win, allowing a pair of earned runs. The right-hander also struck out five.

With the win, the Baycats are now 21-10 on the season and hold the second-place spot going into next week’s Intercounty Baseball League action.

In more serious news, catcher Tyler Plumpton was removed from today’s game with an ankle injury. When warming up relief pitcher Brandon Hillier in the ninth inning, Plumpton appeared to hurt his ankle, one that was hit earlier in the game.

“He went to the hospital, he thinks it might be broken,” said Baycats manager and GM Josh Matlow referring to Plumpton's ankle. “We’re gonna get some X-Rays done and we’ll go from there,” he added. Some scary news especially for Barrie’s catching situation. Josh Cote will have to go back to school soon meaning he will miss the playoffs.

NEXT UP: The Barrie Baycats are headed to Christie Pits on Wednesday night to take on the Toronto Maple Leafs. The first pitch is at 7:30 pm. Entry is free, broadcast details will be announced shortly.
