ODD STAYS HOT, BAYCATS GET BIG HOME RUN TO BEAT GUELPH 8-7

by Sam Aucoin

GUELPH – In a roller coaster of a game the Barrie Baycats come away with an 8-7 victory over the Guelph Royals. The offense picked up the Baycats in this one, scoring 8 runs on 11 hits including a 4-run 6th inning to help come from behind.

Although the offense was clutch when it needed to be, the pitching didn’t come as easy. Jeifry Nunez started and went 3 innings giving up 2 runs but walking 4. Evan Soules came in after Nunez and although he pitched better than his final line showed, 4 runs still came across. Brad Grieveson also gave up a run, throwing 2 2/3 innings. Picking up the win was Brandon Hillier who delivered a scoreless final frame to lock things up. One thing to mention is that Baycats pitchers punched out 16 Royals hitters in the win.

But then came the Barrie offense. Canice Ejoh with his second triple already on the season drove in Noel McGarry-Doyle for run number 1. After that, Adam Odd and Victor Plaz both hit RBI singles to give the Baycats the lead. Royce Ando, after also getting a base hit, would come in to score on an error by the second baseman Morro. Then in the 7th, Odd would pick up 2 more RBIs on another knock staying red hot.

The biggest hit came in the top of the 9th with the Cats down 7-6. After Josh Cote hit a double coming off the bench, McGarry-Doyle would hit an opposite-field home run to take back the lead. Probably the biggest hit so far for the team this season. Odd and McGarry-Doyle could both be considered for Player of the Game.

Quick turnaround for the Barrie Baycats as they are back on the road tomorrow in Kitchener. The first pitch is set for 2 pm at Jack Couch Park. Tomorrow's game will be on the Panthers' YouTube with commentators Mark Paré and Neil Srivastava. If you are going to Kitchener tomorrow you can buy tickets here
