Maple Leafs Build Early Lead, Hold Off Late Baycats Rally in 12-8 win

Barrie ON – The Toronto Maple Leafs jumped out to an early advantage and never looked back, defeating the Barrie Baycats 12-8 despite a late push from the home side.

Toronto struck first in the opening inning, capitalizing on an RBI single from JJ Dutton before Spenser Ross was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 2-0.

The Maple Leafs broke the game open in the fourth with a six-run inning. Brando Leroux and Yasiel Puig each drove in runs with RBI singles before Dennis Dei Baning delivered the biggest blow, lining a two-run single to right. Mike Cecchetto later added an RBI single, and another run crossed on an error as Toronto stretched its lead to 8-0.

Barrie got on the board in the fifth when Wandy Ciprian singled home Ryan Rijo to cut the deficit to 8-1, but Toronto answered with two more runs in the sixth. Cecchetto lifted a sacrifice fly before Matt Brandt added an RBI single to extend the lead to 10-1.

The Maple Leafs continued to add on in the seventh as Benjamin Sitarenios drove in a run on a fielder's choice before Dutton doubled home another, making it 12-1.

The Baycats mounted a spirited comeback in the bottom half of the seventh. Ryan Rijo launched a two-run home run to left before Clayton Keyes followed with a two-run single, trimming the deficit to 12-5.

Barrie continued to chip away in the ninth. Canice Ejoh was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home a run before Noel McGarry Doyle lined a two-run single to right, bringing the Baycats within four. The rally ended there, however, as Toronto closed out the 12-8 victory.

Frankie Gulko earned the win for Toronto, while Saul Vasquez took the loss for Barrie.

Dutton led the Maple Leafs offense with four hits and two RBIs, while Dennis Dei Baning collected three hits and two RBIs. Puig also finished with three hits and an RBI. For Barrie, Rijo homered and drove in two runs, while Keyes and McGarry Doyle each recorded two RBIs in the losing effort.
