GOOD START, BAD FINISH AS BARRIE FALLS 11-5 IN HAMILTON

by Sam Aucoin

HAMILTON – What started off good turned rough for the Barrie Baycats as they dropped a tough one 11-5 to the Hamilton Cardinals at Bernie Arbour Memorial Stadium. With the loss, Barrie is 2-3 on the season and they have lost 3-straight games.

The Baycats got off to an awesome start scoring 4 runs in the first 6 innings. Owen Jansen hit a 2-run double and later scored on a missed pop-up by the shortstop to make it 3-0. Then, in the 6th, more bad defense by the Cardinals let Adam Odd score making it 4-0.

Evan Soules had another good outing on the mound in his first start of the season. Striking out 6 in 6 innings, Soules didn’t allow a run until the 6th inning. Unfortunately, In that inning came a 2-run triple by Danny Berg that capped a 3-run frame getting Hamilton within a run.

The Red Birds were not done yet. In the 7th inning, they scored 2 more to go up 5-4. First came an error by the first baseman Jansen. Then, Tyler Duncan hit a sacrifice fly to score Charlie Towers for the lead. But, in the top of the 8th inning, Starlin Rodriguez would tie the game with his second home run of the season giving life to the Cats.

That didn’t last long though as the bottom half would be one to forget for Baycats fans. A total of 6 runs would come into score for the Cardinals. Brandon Latter started it with a 2 RBI double. Luis Bernardo also added a 2 RBI knock. Both teams were very sloppy on defense today and it showed. 8 unearned runs combined would cross home plate.

While the infield had a tough game, the outfield was a different story. Christian Kuzemka would make an excellent sliding catch to rob Charlie Towers in the third. Starlin Rodriguez also made some great catches going back in deep center field. In a game that was hard to watch, there definitely were some highlights to take away.

Along with his second big fly and great defense early on, Rodriguez went 2/3 at the plate with a walk. Also mentioned above was another solid performance by Evan Soules. The winning pitcher in this game was Corben Peters (1) who threw 2 innings giving up a run and punching out 4 in relief. On the losing end was Aidan Rossel (1).
