Garcés Dominates as Baycats Outlast Majors in Extras
London, ON – Let’s go home!
The Barrie Baycats picked up a big 3-1 win Friday night in London on the back of a stellar performance from Frank Garcés. The game was scoreless going into extra innings, but one run in the tenth and two more in the eleventh got the job done. Francisco Hernandez’s team-leading third home run of the season in the eleventh was the big hit Barrie was looking for.
Another column that lit up with a zero on the Labatt Park scoreboard was the home side's hits. Up until the eighth inning, the Majors did not have a base knock — they didn’t even have a base runner. Barrie starter Frank Garcés was flirting with history in his best outing of the season so far, striking out 10. But in the bottom of the eighth, the Majors got the first two on with singles, breaking up the lefty’s bid at perfection.
The last no-hitter in the Intercounty Baseball League was a combined effort in the 2018 playoffs by Zach Sloan and Marek Deska of the Toronto Maple Leafs in Kitchener. Before that, you have to go all the way back to 2003, and it was a Baycat — Derek McDaid against St. Thomas.
Victor Payano started for London and went six strong innings with eight punchouts. Colby Ring and Ryan Beitel combined to pitch the next three innings, keeping Barrie off the board and sending the game to extras. Skylar Janisse, who got the save against Barrie on May 24 at Athletic Kulture Stadium, gave up three runs in the two extra frames and was charged with the loss.
Carlos Sano threw the final three innings, giving up one run but shutting it down in the 11th to notch his first win of the year.
Final Score: Baycats 3, Majors 1.
NEXT UP: The Baycats head to Toronto next Wednesday to face off against the Maple Leafs at 7:30 p.m. Don’t forget — the 22U Barrie Baycats open up their season Saturday afternoon against the Hamilton Junior Cardinals at Athletic Kulture Stadium. First pitch is at 4:05 p.m., and you can get tickets before the game at the box office.
