GAME RECAP: Jackfish Win Big in Matchup Against Baycats

by Patrick Melbourne

The Welland Jackfish may have lost their matchup against Frank Garcés and the Barrie Baycats on August 11th, but they won big in their rematch on Saturday, August 20th - the Jackfish won 14-2 in their evening home game over the Baycats.

The Jackfish got on the board early against Baycats starter Frank Garcés; leadoff hitter Gianfranco Morello led off the bottom half of the first with a big double, and he scored three pitches later on an inside-the-park home run from Justin Gideon.

Gideon, who entered the game with a batting average over .370 on the season, now has 18 home runs on the season. The Jackfish would add 13 more runs in the game.

The Baycats offensive performances were highlighted by second baseman Owen Jansen, who finished the game with three hits, two RBI, and a huge home run - the no-doubt homer was hit to right field off of Jackfish reliever Chris Boatto.

Rich Corrente (6-2) got the win, allowing zero runs on five hits across six innings pitched. Garcés (2-3) would get the loss. Deivy Mendez threw a strong ninth inning, showcasing his fastball and continuing his scoreless streak across the IBL regular season.

The Barrie Baycats finish their regular season on Sunday evening with a matchup against the Brantford Red Sox at Vintage Throne Stadium. You can get tickets here, or watch on Baycats TV.
