Baycats Outslug Leafs in High-Scoring Battle at Christie Pits

by Sam Aucoin

Toronto, ON – Make it two straight for the Barrie Baycats, as they win big over the Toronto Maple Leafs at Christie Pits. Barrie hammered four baseballs over the wall and plated 17 runs behind a five-inning outing from Cesar Rosado. Three different Baycats drove in three runs each.

Both teams went back and forth early, but Barrie took advantage of some fortunate opportunities, scoring six unearned runs over the first four innings. A Malik Williams two-run double and a two-run opposite-field shot from Ryan Rijo highlighted Barrie’s four-run fourth. They scored four more the next inning, led by a two-RBI double from Brandon Hernandez.

Early this season, it seemed like the Baycats' offence was so close to breaking out. Now, with three of their four wins seeing them score more than 10 runs, it’s safe to say they can turn it on, and have lately. How does 18 hits and 10 walks sound? Pretty good heading into a pair of home matchups.

Rosado picked up the win — his second of the season and first on the road in 2025. Sometimes they’re not pretty, but he battled through five innings and kept his team in it as Toronto threatened early on. The Baycats' right-hander struck out six and gave up three earned runs.

Luis Florentino, Rosado’s counterpart, didn’t get much help from behind. Florentino didn’t allow an earned run but exited after four innings with his team down 6-3, getting a no-decision. Eugene Lee was charged with the loss in relief, surrendering all four runs in the fifth.

Adam Khan earned a 12-out save, striking out four and giving up four.

Noah Hull and Asafa Jones both hit their first home runs in the Intercounty Baseball League — coincidentally going back-to-back in the eighth. Tristan Clarke launched his second homer of the year, a three-run shot followed by a nice bat flip that may have sparked some shouting between both sides after Clarke rounded the bases, but nothing escalated too far.

After starting the season 0-3, the Baycats are now 4-3 in their last seven games.

Final Score: Baycats 17, Maple Leafs 7
