Baycats Outlast Red Sox in Tenth, Keep Climbing Standings
Barrie, ON – Another hot one at the ballpark. It was a scorcher. But just like last Saturday, which brought similar heat, the Baycats pulled off a walk-off win—this time 6–5 over the Brantford Red Sox. Another winning streak is underway, and don’t look now, but the Baycats are chasing down the London Majors for second place in the IBL standings, just half a game back.
Chipping away through the first five innings, Barrie held a 5–3 advantage heading into the sixth. Run-scoring singles from Noah Hull, Alex Wickett, and Tristan Clarke helped plate a run in each of the first five frames. But a lull in offence late in the game gave Brantford a chance.
Juan Benítez matched his season high with eight strikeouts. He seems to bring out his best stuff against the Red Sox. Benítez allowed three earned runs on nine hits and a walk.
Ethan Paulos hit an RBI single in the eighth, scoring Lucas Lefebvre to tie the game. Noel McGarry Doyle’s rocket throw to Tyler Plumpton at home plate nailed Rene Tachioka, who was trying to give Brantford the lead. Later, in the top of the tenth, it was another defensive gem that may have saved the game—Tristan Clarke's diving catch robbed Paulos of a hit that could have broken the tie, ending the inning.
Carlos Sano’s two scoreless innings felt eerily similar to last Saturday. History repeated itself, as after Brandon Hernandez stole third—allowing Willy Garcia to take second when no one covered the base—Austin Boylan’s sacrifice fly was all that was needed. Hernandez scored to secure the win as the Baycats chased after Boylan to kick off the post-win celebration beyond second base.
FINAL SCORE: Baycats 6, Red Sox 5.
NEXT UP: The Baycats head to Kitchener tomorrow for a battle with the Panthers at Jack Couch Park. First pitch is at 5:00 p.m.
