Baycats Extend Winning Streak with 6-3 win Over Royals

by Sam Aucoin

BARRIE – Another great starting pitching performance and another Barrie Baycats win, 6-3, over the Guelph Royals. The Baycats have now won nine of their last eleven games and sit two and a half games back of the Welland Jackfish for first place.

Frank Garcés lowered his earned run average to 1.88 after seven shutout innings, striking out ten Guelph batters. Garcés allowed only three hits and stranded them all. Frank has now won six games in 2024, tying his 2023 total.

The Baycats scored three runs in the third inning, capped by a two-run double from Nolan Machibroda, who now has 19 RBIs on the season. Hayden Jaco also drove in one run on a sac fly.

A pair of two-out singles in the fifth by Malik Williams and Ryan Rijo brought in two more runs. Rijo’s two hits – including a double in the second inning – tonight bring his average up over .200. The Baycats’ designated hitter has been streaky so far this season, but tonight is hopefully a sign of good things to come.

Guelph scored one run in the eighth and two in the ninth off Ryan Lacasse, but it was not enough. Barrie added a sixth run on another RBI base hit from Williams, this time a double to left centre.

Keon Moseni and Ethan Hammond both drove in runs for the Royals. Moseni’s eighth-inning home run was his first in the IBL and part of a two-RBI night for the Guelph DH. Yuki Narita, after pitching very well last Thursday in Barrie, did not fare as well tonight and was charged with the loss.
