Wilson, Benítez Named IBL All-Stars for 2021

by Barrie Baycats

MIDHURST - The Intercounty Baseball League has announced their All-Stars for the league's 2021 season. Two Barrie Baycats players, Jake Wilson and Juan Benítez, were named to their first IBL All-Star Teams.

Wilson, playing in his first season for the Baycats, became a fan favourite quickly after hitting an inside-the-park home run in his team debut. Often seen at the top of the batting order, Wilson played both outfield and infield for the club. Wilson played 29 regular season games, hitting .362 with four home runs and ten stolen bases. He finished third in the league with 47 hits across the regular season. He also scored five runs in the 2021 IBL Postseason. He was named as an outfielder on the IBL First Team All-Stars for 2021.

Benítez, also in his first IBL season, established himself quickly at the top of Barrie's rotation. He finished the season with a 5-2 record and a 3.04 ERA (third in the league) across 62 innings pitched. The right-hander, from Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, walked off the mound to a standing ovation following an excellent performance in game two of Barrie's first round postseason series against Welland. He finished third in the IBL with 46 strikeouts across the regular season. He was named as a right-handed pitcher on the IBL Second Team All-Stars for 2021.

"I'm glad that both Wilson and Benítez are getting recognized for the excellent job they did across the season for the Baycats," said Barrie Baycats TV analyst Patrick Melbourne. "They were so strong all year and deserve every bit of praise they've received."
