Wickett and McGarry Doyle Shine as Baycats Edge Majors on Canada Day
London, ON – If there were a way the IBL could add players to the All-Star ballot, you'd see Alex Wickett and Noel McGarry-Doyle on there, as both continued to mash the baseball in a nail-biting 6-5 Baycats win over the Majors on Canada Day. We knew what to expect from McGarry-Doyle, but Wickett has come up from the 22U Baycats and all he’s done at the next level is hit.
Three more hits tonight for the Barrie second baseman, who crossed home twice. The Baycats once again struck first with a three-spot in the third, followed by one more in the fifth. Brandon Hernandez drove in McGarry-Doyle and Wickett. Then, Clayton Keyes and Nolan Machibroda hit back-to-back doubles to make it 3–0. McGarry-Doyle and Wickett were at it again in the next inning with another set of back-to-back two-base hits cashing in the fourth Barrie run.
Cesar Rosado got the win, punching out eight over six innings. His third-inning throwing miscue led to the only run he allowed in the ballgame. Ramon Henriquez gave up a pair in the eighth, but Noah Hull’s two-run single provided the insurance the Cats needed.
The Baycats seized the moment in front of over 5,000 fans at Labatt Park. Eight of the nine starters recorded a hit. Machibroda and Wickett had three each, while McGarry-Doyle led the way with four. Hernandez and Hull each drove in a pair, and five different Baycats collected an extra-base hit.
Carlos Sano got the save, escaping trouble by striking out Ty Mosher to end the game. Sano now has three saves on the season. Travis Keys was charged with his first loss of the year.
FINAL SCORE: Baycats 6, Majors 5.
NEXT UP: The Baycats are back home this Thursday for Tropical Night presented by Freshii Barrie North. First pitch is at 7:35 p.m. against the Guelph Royals.
