WELLAND EVENS UP THE SERIES WITH A 3-2 WIN IN BARRIE

by Sam Aucoin

BARRIE — A disappointing finish to a well-played game saw the Welland Jackfish defeat the Barrie Baycats 3-2. Carlos Martinez came through with a go-ahead two-run home run in the ninth inning, putting Welland on top.

Despite the result, Barrie controlled this game for eight solid innings. That was in large part due to another fantastic start from Frank Garcés. Garcés struck out ten batters over eight innings on just four hits. His counterpart, Jake Harford, was almost just as good. Holding the Baycats to just a pair of runs over seven innings, Harford kept his team in the game.

Brandon Underhill got the win in relief, his first of the playoffs. Deivy Mendez picked up the save, working a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his second of the postseason. Brad Grieveson was charged with the loss. The big blow and the turning point in tonight's game was a go-ahead home run from Carlos Martinez.

For Barrie, it was Royce Ando and Carson Burns driving in the runs. Ando went four for four in the game while playing solid defense at second base. Burns, along with Adam Odd, each had two hits.
