by Patrick Melbourne

LONDON - It was a close game and, as expected, a pitcher's duel, but the Barrie Baycats lost to the London Majors 4-3. Here's the official recap from the Intercounty Baseball League website, written by the IBL media team:

Jakob Newton’s two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh was the difference in the London Majors’ 4-3 win over Barrie Friday night at Labatt Park.

Newton’s third longball of the season gave London (20-8) a 4-1 lead at the time, and Daniel Gore recorded the last two outs to preserve the victory with his first save. London starter Jose Arias (8-0) struck out 12 over seven innings. He gave up an unearned run and scattered four hits and a walk.

Austin Wilkie drove in a run and Starling Joseph singled and doubled. Andrew Lawrence scored twice and stole a base.

Noel McGarry-Doyle went 3-for-4 with two runs and a stolen base to lead Barrie (17-13). Owen Jansen singled twice, scored and also swiped a bag.

Frank Garcés (0-1) took the loss, yielding two runs on six hits over six innings. He walked one and struck out six.

Extra notes:
