LATE OFFENSE HELPS WELLAND WIN 8-4 OVER BARRIE

by Sam Aucoin

BARRIE – The end result may not have been what the Baycats wanted, but they sure made things exciting, coming up short against the Welland Jackfish by a score of 8-4. Not a whole lot happened offensively for most of this game until late, with eight runs combined in the eighth and ninth innings.

Welland starter Jake Harford (4-2) picked up the win, going five and a third innings and surrendering just one earned run on a single base hit. Frank Garcés was charged with his first loss on the mound this season. Despite the loss, Garcés was still great, tossing seven innings with ten strikeouts and only two earned runs.

The offensive story today was the Jackfish hit total. Welland pounded out 18 hits, with four of them going for extra bases. Matteo Porcellato, Caleb Feuerstake, and Tyler Dupuis each had three base hits, with Hogan Brown picking up four, making him one hit shy of 100 for his IBL career.

Ryan Rijo stayed hot, smacking his 11th home run of the season, this time of the three-run variety. With that eighth-inning blast, Rijo’s IBL career home run total matches his jersey number (27). Hayden Jaco also drove in a run, giving him 14 RBI on the season.
