JACKFISH SCORE SIX LATE AND BEAT BARRIE 9-4

by Sam Aucoin

BARRIE – Another unfortunate ninth inning for the Barrie Baycats as they fall 9-4 to the Welland Jackfish tonight. The Baycats had a couple of leads in this game with the top five hitters providing most of the offense.

This matchup started great for the home team. Three runs crossed the plate in the bottom of the first. The outfield trio got things going with a leadoff single from Noel McGarry-Doyle. Canice Ejoh followed that with a walk and Startlin Rodriguez cashed in McGarry-Doyle with an RBI base hit. Then, after an error on the catcher Sam Cawker which allowed Ejoh to score and Rodriguez to get to third, Ryan Rijo hit a sacrifice fly making it 3-0.

Frank Garcés made his season debut for Barrie and went six and two-thirds allowing three earned runs and striking out six. The one rocky inning for Garcés was the third. It started with a hit from Matteo Porcellato who would steal second and then advance to third on a wild pitch before coming into score on a base knock from Gianfranco Morello. The game was quickly tied when Brandon Nickolson hit a two-run home run deep over the left field wall.

Barrie would take the lead right back in the next half-inning. Back-to-back hits from Rodriguez and Rijo put runners on first and third. Adam Odd then hit a sacrifice fly giving the Baycats their second advantage of the night. Garcés settled in nicely to work his way into the seventh inning and hand things over to Evan Soules. Soules would get out of that inning with a strikeout.

But in the eighth inning, one bad pitch proved to be costly as Steven Moretto tied the game on another long home run. The final inning didn’t get much better. Brandon Hillier could only get one out before Brad Grieveson had to step in. Two doubles in the inning broke open the game. One by James Smibert, a little bouncer up the middle scoring three runs, then a gapper from Hogan Brown scoring two more. Jackfish reliever Deivy Mendez brought the heat in the bottom half striking out the side to close it out.

The Barrie Baycats have another home game this Saturday when they welcome the Kitchener Panthers to Vintage Throne Stadium. The start time is scheduled for 4:05 pm. Get your tickets here.
