JACKFISH SCORE FIVE LATE TO BEAT BARRIE 9-3

by Sam Aucoin

WELLAND – Lately this season, the Baycats' pitching has been able to limit the big inning. Early in the year, that was a problem for them, and that problem came back in tonight's game, which unfortunately led to a 9-3 Welland Jackfish victory.

With five runs late and a strong relief option in Deivy Mendez, Barrie’s hopes of winning slipped away. A Ryan Rijo home run in the eighth inning gave them life, but they could not keep the Jackfish in check. Despite the loss, we saw some fantastic defence from Starlin Rodriguez, as he made two incredible catches to save multiple runs.

Jeifry Nunez (3-3) took the ball for the Baycats and gave his team four very good innings. It was the fifth that gave him trouble. A couple of run-scoring singles were followed by a Hogan Brown two-run double, making it 4-2 Welland. Nunez finished with six innings, four earned runs, and a pair of strikeouts.

Along with his great defence, Starlin Rodriguez also produced with the bat, smacking a double that scored a pair of runs, giving the Cats an early lead. Ryan Rijo, Hayden Jaco, and Adam Odd each had multi-hit games in the losing effort.
