GREAT PITCHING FROM GRIEVESON AND A TRIPLE PLAY LEAD TO 5-3 BARRIE WIN IN EXTRAS

by Sam Aucoin

TORONTO – What a game! The Barrie Baycats win in 12 innings over the Toronto Maple Leafs by a score of 5-3. Barrie was led by the spectacular performance from Brad Grieveson who gave his team four shutout innings of extra inning relief.

The Baycats got things started early on with two home runs, one from Starlin Rodriguez and the other from Ryan Rijo. Both Rodriguez and Rijo are now tied for the team lead in that category with six. Toronto responded in the bottom half on a single from Garrett Takamatsu. Then, on a wild pitch, Justin Marra came into score making it a one-run game.

But in the bottom of the eighth inning, an unfortunate defensive play brought in the tying run for the Leafs. This would be one of the only defensive misplays in the game for both teams. Jose Vinicio, the Leafs' shortstop, made some outstanding plays and Carson Burns may have saved the game in the eighth with a diving stop at third base.

The winning pitcher was Brad Grieveson and well deserved. Grieveson got through two bases loaded nobody out situations. Brad got some help from his infield defense including a play of his own to cut down the winning run at the plate. But in the 11th inning, it was the exciting triple play that got him off the field. You can watch that here!

Zach Sloan was charged with the loss giving up the go-ahead runs. A walk to Kyle Maves and a wild pitch scoring Avery Tuck got the job done for the Cats. Juan Benítez started this game for Barrie. He was matched up against Sam Green. Both pitchers kept their teams in the game. Benítez went six innings giving up two earned on four punchouts. Green tossed five frames allowing three earned runs and a career-high eight K’s.

With that crazy game over and done with, the Barrie Baycats will be back home this Saturday when they welcome the London Majors. It is another 4:05 pm start time from Vintage Throne Stadium. Get your tickets here. You can stream the game live on Baycats TV
