GARCÉS THROWS A GEM TO LEAD THE BAYCATS TO THEIR FOURTH STRAIGHT WIN

by Sam Aucoin

LONDON – Another close game and another win for the Barrie Baycats who just beat the London Majors 5-4 today. Barrie has now won four in a row with three wins this weekend.

For the first time in this four-win stretch, the Baycats scored first. One run in the first inning and two in the second. Canice Ejoh started things with a single and was driven in on a Ryan Rijo sac fly. In the second, Adam Odd led off with a double that was followed by a Josh Cote single bringing in Odd. Later in the inning, Noel McGarry-Doyle smacked a base hit, and thanks to a throwing error by the left fielder Starling Joseph, Cote was able to score making it 3-0.

That was it for the scoring until later on as starters Frank Garcés (Barrie) and Pedro De Los Santos (London) were in a pitcher's duel. It was Garcés though that had the better line. Seven innings of shutout baseball on three hits. Not to mention he struck out ten. Up until the sixth inning, Frank was throwing a perfect game which should tell you just how good he was this afternoon.

But the Baycats would need more run support as shutting out London for much longer would be difficult. That is when the red-hot bat of Ryan Rijo stepped up with McGarry-Doyle on third base and two outs in the seventh inning. On a two and two count Rijo blasted another home run over the right field wall for two much-needed add-on runs.

They were much needed because when Evan Soules came out of the bullpen he was tagged for three earned runs. Keith Kandel drove in the first run with a single. Then, after Bandon Hillier came in to relieve Soules, Starling Joseph cleared the bases on a three RBI double making it a one-run game at 5-4. The Baycats then turned to their third pitcher of the inning Brad Grieveson and Brad was able to stop the bleeding.

Grieveson came back out to work a scoreless final inning and secure victory for the Cats. Overall, it was a great team win. Starlin Rodriguez and Carson Burns flashed the leather on some great defensive plays and Josh Cote went 3/4 with an RBI and a run scored. Rijo, to go along with the home run, went 1/3 with three RBIs.

The Barrie Baycats will play one more road game before coming back to Vintage Throne Stadium to play Toronto on Thursday. That road game will take place in Guelph this Tuesday at 7:30 pm from Hastings Stadium. A Baycats TV broadcast for that game is still to be announced. Should it not happen, Guelph will have it on their YouTube Channel. You can also buy tickets to that game here
