GAME RECAP: Jackfish Win Saturday Matchup Against Baycats

by Patrick Melbourne

BARRIE - The Baycats and the Jackfish played in a close game on Saturday afternoon, but it was the Jackfish that ended up winning 6-2.

Jake Harford (3-0) got the win for the Jackfish, continuing his strong season with a complete game. Juan Benítez (0-2) was handed the loss, giving up four runs on six hits across 6 2/3 innings.

The biggest highlight for Barrie was Adam Odd’s home run in the top of the seventh inning, which, at the time, tied the game at two.

Looking back in the game, Welland had scored one in the second inning and another in the third. In the fourth, Noel McGarry-Doyle led off the inning with a triple. A batter later, James Anderson hit an RBI single to score McGarry-Doyle and give the Baycats their first run. The aforementioned Odd home run tied the game until the bottom of the seventh.

In Welland’s half of the seventh, Matt Hilderbrandt led off with a double. Two outs later, pinch runner Hogan Brown scored on a Gianfranco Morello triple. Morello would be the last batter Benítez faced in the game. After the pitching change, Tyler Dupuis singled, scoring Morello to make it 4-2. The Jackfish added two more runs in the eighth inning.

Although Benítez pitched well overall (he gave up only two runs in the first six innings), the Jackfish were able to win their first game of the season against the Baycats, and improve their record to an impressive 7-1. After the loss, the Baycats are now 4-4.

These two teams will play again tomorrow, this time in Barrie at Vintage Throne Stadium. The Baycats are 3-1 this season at home. On Sunday, the second game will be at Vintage Throne Stadium, and it will begin at 7:00 PM ET. You can get tickets here. Fans who aren't able to make it to the park can view the full game live on Baycats TV.
