GAME RECAP: Baycats Win on Opening Day Against Maple Leafs

by Patrick Melbourne

MIDHURST - The Baycats were leading through eight innings, and although the ninth inning featured a Maple Leafs home run, the Baycats added a run of their own to win the game 2-1. With the Opening Day win, the team is now 1-0 on the season.

Jayson Aquino was fantastic in his first start with the team, and the bullpen continued with great matchups against the Toronto Maple Leafs batting order. After those eight innings, the team was up 1-0 with their closer on the mound.

Then, the number nine hitter in the order, Ryan Santos, got a pitch from closer Brad Grieveson and hit it out of the park to tie things up. The new score required a big bottom half of the inning - and the Baycats delivered.

Adam Odd singled (and James Anderson pinch-ran), Noel McGarry-Doyle singled, and after a fly out, Carson Burns singled to fill the bases. Catcher Tyler Plumpton was up. After fouling the first pitch, Plumpton hit a fly ball - and no one caught it. James Anderson scored the winning run, and the Baycats won 2-1 in their Opening Day matchup against the Maple Leafs.

WIN: Brad Grieveson (1-0)

LOSS: Adam Marra (0-1)

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Plumpton's walk-off hit (which was scored an error, so it's not actually a hit in the scorebook) was the game winner. Jayson Aquino was also really strong in the season opener.

UPDATE ON ADAM ODD: Odd left the game with an injury. The Baycats TV broadcast reported that the team currently considers him day-to-day.
