CUSTODIO LEADS GUELPH TO AN 8-2 WIN OVER BARRIE

by Sam Aucoin

GUELPH – Tonight may have been a loss but when your opposition has a guy like Claudio Custodio on the mound, nothing comes easy. Custodio threw seven innings in an 8-2 Royals win over the Barrie Baycats.

That being said, the Baycats still had plenty of traffic on the bases but cashing them proved to be the problem as they stranded eight runners. Barrie’s two runs were brought in on a Carson Burns two-run triple in the second inning.

The 25-year-old shortstop now has 14 RBI this season and continues to hit well against Guelph. A .529 average with nine hits and five runs batted in versus the Royals in 2023. Carson has also been a plus defender at shortstop for the Baycats committing just four errors in over 200 innings.

Evan Soules (3-3) got the start today for Barrie. Soules tossed five innings giving up four earned runs. The right-hander struck out three before handing the ball over to the bullpen. Brad Grieveson and Brandon Hillier finished the final three innings each giving up an earned run. It was Grieveson who allowed the two extra runs that were unearned.

The Royals scored six runs in the final four innings to secure the victory. With the loss, Barrie is now 23-12 on the season.
