Baycats Sign Tuck as Deadline Passes

by Ryan Eakin

BARRIE - The Barrie Baycats Baseball Club announced today that we have signed outfielder Avery Tuck for the remainder of the 2021 season.

Tuck, 23, joins the Baycats after beginning his 2021 season with Tri-City in the Frontier League.

In 14 games with the Valley Cats, Tuck batted .188-.220-.333.

Prior to joining the Valley Cats in 2021, Tuck spent two seasons in the Detroit Tigers organization.

A 17th round pick of the Tigers in 2018, the left-handed bat batted a combined .197-.279-577 in his minor league career, largely spent with the West Michigan Whitecaps of the Midwest League.

A close friend of Baycats' slugger Ryan Rijo, Tuck played in college alongside Rijo at New Mexico Junior College.

In his one and only season at the junior college, Tuck dominated, batting .385-.462-.721, good enough for an on-base plus slugging percentage of 1.183.

Tuck, who hit 11 bombs that season, would end up getting drafted by the Tigers that very same spring.

The native of San Diego, California says he is ecstatic to join the Baycats ahead of their push to the playoffs.

"I am super excited to come play baseball in Barrie! Rijo has been talking about the Baycats since we played together at NMJC and he always told me I should come play. It’s nice to finally manifest this and play for such a successful organization. I can’t wait to arrive in Canada on Tuesday and meet my teammates and all the amazing fans! Let’s Go Baycats.”

In other news, we have signed pitcher Riley Hoover. He had most recently pitched for the Newmarket Hawks of the Greater Toronto Baseball League.

Pitchers Evan Kiser and Kevin Millar have been released.
