BAYCATS END WELLAND'S 13 GAME WINSTREAK AND PUSH THEIR'S TO SEVEN

by Sam Aucoin

WELLAND – Say hello to the longest active winning streak in the IBL as the Barrie Baycats beat the Welland Jackfish 14-2. Victor Plaz and Ryan Rijo had great games at the plate and Frank Garcés pitched another gem. With their third win in a row by ten or more runs, the Baycats improve to 11-5 on the season. This now ends an impressive 13-game winning streak by Welland and extends Barrie’s to seven.

Barrie once again turned to the big inning to get it done. After a solo home run by the third baseman Plaz in the top of the second, the visitors would go on to score eight in the fourth. A run-scoring single by Starlin Rodriguez set up bases loaded for the scorching hot Rijo. Ryan quickly reminded the fans at the pond who he was by launching a grand slam to dead center making it 8-0. Some Jackfish defensive mistakes, mixed in with an RBI triple from Plaz, made it 9-0.

All Welland could manage off of Garcés was two RBI hits from Sam Cawker and Brandon Nicholson. Other than that, Frank cruised through six innings with six strikeouts on route to his second win of the season. Will Jackman, the starter for the Fish, only managed an inning and two-thirds getting the loss.

But tonight, it was the Victor Plaz and Ryan Rijo show, they both knocked in five runs. Victor hit two big flies and Rijo, to go along with the grand slam, had another hit and two walks. Josh Cote also continues to swing it, adding two more hits in this one. Shoutout to Aiden Rossel, Adam Khan, and Evan Soules as each one of them pitched a scoreless inning.

Here are a few notes from tonight’s contest. 1. Pitcher Chris Boatto for the Jackfish left the game with an unknown injury. 2. Victor Plaz joins Ryan Rijo as the two Baycats to have multi-home run games this season. 3. Rijo also has hit five home runs in five games.

Your Barrie Baycats will be off tomorrow but will head to Kitchener on Monday for a makeup game from June 11. The start time is set for 7:30 at Jack Couch Park. Stay tuned for broadcast information. Tickets to that game can be bought here.
