Baycats Bolster Lineup With Signing of MacDonald

by Ryan Eakin

BARRIE - The Barrie Baycats Baseball Club announced today that we have signed catcher/corner outfielder Jake MacDonald for the remainder of the 2021 season.

MacDonald, 24, joins the Baycats after wrapping up a successful season for the Solingen Alligators in the German Bundesliga.

In 10 games, MacDonald batted .366-.400.-.707 with three home runs, good enough for a whopping on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS) of 1.107.

The Texas A&M University-Texarkana alumni also added in three stolen bases for good measure.

In 2020, MacDonald also suited up in 10 games for the Alligators, batting .300-.361-.667 with three home runs and four stolen bases.

Prior to his professional career in Germany, MacDonald suited up for the Edmonton Prospects of the Western Canadian Baseball League in 2019, Canada's premier summer collegiate baseball league.

That summer, the White Rock, BC native batted .247-.321-.384 to go along with three home runs and .a pair of stolen bases.

His season with the Prospects came off the heels of his college career, where, in his senior season, he enjoyed a successful season at Texas A&M University-Texarkana in the NAIA.

That year, MacDonald, whose right-handed bat will provide some much-needed balance in the Baycats' lineup, batted .317-.403-.425, good enough for an OPS of .828.

Baycats director of player procurement, who recruited MacDonald to the Baycats, says he is excited to add MacDonald's pro bat to the Baycats' lineup.

“I’m ecstatic to add Jake to our ball club, both offensively and defensively. He is an offensively gifted player, with power to all fields. He will also help our pitching staff behind the plate and with our running game. Our organization is very proud to add Jake not only because of his play, but because of his leadership and personality.”

MacDonald says he is excited to resume his baseball career in Canada.

“After playing all over the world, I’ve always dreamt of coming back to Canada to play at an elite level. I am super excited to be joining the Baycats this season. I can’t wait to be a part of the next championship in Barrie”

In corresponding moves, we have released pitcher Cole White and infielder Jalir Bentacourt Lopez, while catcher Anthony Quirion has signed with the Philadelphia Phillies as a free agent!

The Baycats Baseball Club would like to congratulate Quirion on signing with the Phillies and wish him nothing but the best as he begins his professional career.
