Baycats Add to Infield With Signing of Jansen

by Ryan Eakin

BARRIE - The Barrie Baycats Baseball Club announced today that we have signed infielder Owen Jansen for the remainder of the 2021 season.

Jansen, 22, will head back to Saint Leo University in September for his graduate season.

Through the first four seasons of his college career, the Oakville, Ontario native has spent time at both Saint Leo and Purdue University.

The infielder, who played for the Ontario Blue Jays program during his travel ball career, projects to be a mainstay in the Baycats' middle infield for years to come due to his high-end speed and defensive ability.

The left-handed bat was named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team in his sophomore season at Purdue.

Baycats director of player procurement Dante DeCaria, who signed Jansen to the Baycats, says he believes Jansen will be a massive addition to the Baycats' middle-infield.

"The Baycats organization is very excited to add an infielder with four years of college experience under his belt. Owen's relationship with some of the players on our roster will help our chemistry. His on-field play will speak for itself. I think anytime you can add a four-year college infielder, who can play anywhere on the diamond, and hit, it's a welcome addition." We are excited to watch Owen play this season, and for years to come."

Jansen, who will join the Baycats next week after wrapping up his summer ball season in the States, says he is excited to join the Baycats and play with former OBJ teammates in Ryan Rijo and Royce Ando.

"I’ve known a ton of players that have played for the Baycats in the past as well as guys on the team now. I’ve heard nothing but positive things. When the opportunity arose for me to join the Baycats this month, it seemed like the perfect fit. I’m looking forward to getting on the field with the guys, having fun, and contributing to the club’s winning tradition."
