GARCÉS, BURNS LEAD BARRIE TO A 10-7 WIN ON CANADA DAY!

by Sam Aucoin

WELLAND – That’s a Canada Day Victory! The Barrie Baycats win 10-7 in Welland to extend their winning streak to nine games! Barrie got another great start from Frank Garcés and some big hits from the offense.

It did not take long for the bats to get going. With Hayden Jaco, Victor Plaz, and Josh Cote on base, Carson Burns hit a double down the right-field line clearing the bases. Kyle Maves would then knock in Burns making it 4-1. A four-run second inning quickly erased a 1-0 Welland lead.

The two teams both scored in the fifth inning. Barrie’s run came on a monster home run from Starlin Rodriguez. Sam Cawker then answered for the Jackfish with a single, scoring Gianfranco Morello. That would be all for the home team against Garcés. Frank picked up the win (3) striking out eight.

The Baycats would get three important runs in the eighth inning. Owen Jansen drove in the first run and another multi-RBI hit, this time from Ejoh, gave Barrie a 10-2 lead. The Fish would get a couple of home runs from Ethan Hunt and McCoy Pearce but it would not be enough as Brandon Hillier closed it out. With nine wins in a row, the Cats are now tied for first place!

Here are some notes from tonight’s game. 1. Carson Burns went three for five at the plate and earned Player of the Game honours. 2. Frank Garcés has struck out six or more batters in all his starts this season, 30 K’s in total. 3. The Baycats have scored ten or more runs in five straight games!

There is an injury report from tonight's game. After being hit by a pitch from fire-throwing Jackfish relief pitcher Deivy Mendez, catcher Josh Cote appeared to be in intense pain. He was taken out of the game because of it. Cote was seen getting ice to relieve some soreness by Kendra Doyle of Baycats TV. More to come…
