In Toronto, rookie Drew Taylor pitched six strong innings as the defending IBL champion Toronto Maple Leafs opened their season with a 3-2 win over the Barrie Baycats at Christie Pits.
Taylor allowed just one unearned run on four hits with six strikeouts and no walks to earn his first IBL victory. Doug Dimma pitched the final three innings for the save.
Nildo Puertas had two hits as Toronto made the most of just five hits. Dan Gibbons and Gamin Teague drove in runs with the winning run scoring on a wild pitch by reliever Chris England in the sixth inning.
Former Leaf Paul Spoljaric started for Barrie and went four innings, allowing one run on two hits. Jake Hynes took the loss, charged with two runs in 1 2/3 innings. Todd Betts homered in the ninth inning for Barrie and Glen Jackson had two hits, including an RBI single.
The next scheduled game is Sunday May 11th in Kitchener. The Baycats Home Opener is Saturday May 17th against the Guelph Royals, game tme is 2:00 PM.
