2 FORMER BAYCATS RETURN TO THE TEAM!

Cam Newitt Returns To The Mound For The Baycats This Season!

The Barrie Baycats, Simcoe County’s Team, today announced the return of two former Baycats to the 2008 team roster. Back from playing in the inaugural season of the Israel Professional Baseball League (IBL) is Josh Matlow. Josh was drafted by the IBL at the end of the Baycats 2006 season and spent the 2007 season with the Tel Aviv Lightning, was a League All-star, hit .381 and was third in IBL batting. From Israel, Josh went to Australia from October ’07 to March ’08 where had a very productive season, leading his Australian team in all hitting categories including a team high .351 average and leader in RBI’s. Although he was offered a playing position in the Holland Pro League for the 2008 season, Josh wanted to return home to Thornhill and complete his last year of a post secondary degree (Canisius College in NY) and play once again for the Baycats.

Cam Newitt, who has been a Baycat since 2002 (Rookie of the year in the IBL in 2001, 1st Team All-star), took a year away from baseball in 2007 but has caught the ‘bug’ and will be returning to the pitching staff again. Cam has pitched both as a starter and as the Baycat’s closer in past years and is considered one of the top right-handed pitchers in the Intercounty Baseball League. He has logged over 175 innings in his IBL career, appearing in 47 games with an E.R.A of 3.15.

Baycats’ President David Mills was delighted with the return of both players. “Cam and Josh were key members of our 2005 Championship year and our 2006 Pennant year and to have them back just adds another significant piece to our 2008 roster and added depth. They are both fine young men, great in the clubhouse and fan favourites”, commented Mills.
